what color is brake fluid?

What color is my brake fluid suposed to be?
While working on my brakes for the first time i had to bleed out some brake fluid to get the calipers back on.
the fluid that bleed out was a brown/yellow color. i thought it was suposed to be red atf fluid???

I is not supposed to be red. The brown/gold colour is correct.
 






NO do not use ATF!!! Brake fluid should be yellow/clear or if its sylicone then it should be purple...
 












The brake fluid should really be clear -- that's what it looks like when it goes in. As your breaking system wears and the fluid breaks down, it will begin to turn the brownish color you describe. When you bleed the brakes and find browinsh color fluid, it is a good idea to keep bleeding each line till the fluid runs clear.
