I have a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer with 5.0 V8 and AWD it has about 157100 miles on it. About a week ago I noticed a loud roaring/ growling/ moaning noise coming from the right front of the SUV at speeds of 20 to 70mph.
The noise is very pronounced at 35 mph. It moans and roars when you are speeding up and then growls when you slow down.
I have had new shocks, control arms, struts, breaks, and I think calipers and rotors put on. I had been having issues with both of my front tires developing slow leaks and thought that the tires must be the issue so Friday I broke down and got 4 brand new Goodyear Wrangler Raidails ( ? spelling) size P235/75/15 which is what the car came with when I bought it in March of 09 but the noise continues. My friend thought it might be the wheel bearings but I'm not sure because it is not making the tell tell scraping noise that wheal bearings make.
