Well as you may have read in my other post I'm re-doing, cutting up, sealing my cousins old box for myself.

It originally had carpet on it which I'm still in the process of pulling out (which is NO fun). I was wondering what I could use to put on the wood to make it have a smooth finish after paint.

Something like bondo maybe that can be molded before it dries? anyone know what I can use?

Where can I pick that up at? and is it reasonably cheap?

Alright thanks again, by the way... your truck, it kicks ass.

(also this is for my home stereo so it has to look atleast decent or I would just leave the wood look on it)

also is there anyway to get the leftover carpet hairs that are still glued to the wood off? maybe a belt sander?

exactly my thinking....

man this carpet is hard to get off !

Just sand it, sand it, sand it, and then sand it some more. I then used a good primer, and did several coats of that, followed by the finish paint...This was what I had in my old truck:

if you are going to put body filler over it then dont worry about getting every last piece of carpet off. the body filler will cover it and you wont beable to see it.

yeah the belt sander took most of the extra carpet fuzz left over when it heated up the glue. Vairking that looks nice man! I have decided to go with a high gloss black paint and am cutting up the box tomorrow.

Should I worry about the glue? it is almost like a thin coating of tree sap, nasty stuff.

When I built my box, I sanded it with a coarse paper, then primered it, sanded it with finer paper, sanded it, and repeated this process until I had sanded the thing at least 4 times. Then started painting, and after each coat of paint, used a very fine sand paper to sand it smooth. The result came out like this: (Note the shine, and the fact that you cannot see any seams in the box):

Looks great !....

I just got done scraping literally 1lbs of brown glue of the outside of the box. But after all this hard work it will be nice to admire on top of my computer desk everyday :)

Just out of curiosity, why dont you just build a new box?

thats the whole point... I had a spare box, If I didn't I probably wouldn't even try this. I'm bored and it's a 'project' and my in-home system could use some more bass.

My car has enough lol
