Rebuilt the LSD but had a problem.

Once all the new Steels and Culches were installed and the spider and side gears back in the axles wouldn’t sit back enough to allow the Cross shaft to clear the ends of the Axle. :thumbdwn:

I changed the position of one of the 0 Rings so it sat behind the C-Clip allowing the axle to sit back a little more but the arrangement was still about ½ a millimetre to tight (More than what the shims were adding)

I ended up having to take .3 of a millimetre off one side and .2 off the other side of the Cross shaft using a grinding wheel and wet and dry sand paper to smooth it out agene.

This then allowed the Cross shaft to slide in with a bit of help with the hammer, but it’s still tight.

Do you think anything bad will occur from shaving ½ a mill of the Cross shaft diameter? :D  :thumbdwn:

Second question> why the hell was it so tight, when I pulled it out it just fell out soon as the retaining bolt was removed then with the new culches and steels installed the axles ends sitting around a Millimetre further in. The only thing I could think of was the Steels were thinker than the ones I removed, There was only one shim each side and they were real thin so taking them out totally wouldn’t of fixed the problem

Oh and that Pre Load spring is a B**h to get back in, I tried vice grips, pliers, hammering well compressing it with vice grips, I ended up having to put it in a vice and compress the F**k out of it to take some of the “Spring” out of it, than giving it a Good solid belt with a hammer to get it home.

Still got to put the Diff backing plate back on and fill it with oil, bit all indications are it is going to be one Very Tight LSD. :D

Cheers.

I had the same problem but 1000km later it seems to be OK.. This was the first time I have rebuilt a LSD and to boot I did the 1+ mod. Yes the s-spring was a huge PITA.. But vice-grips and big hammer solved that problem in short order. Now.. the first time I backed the truck out of the driveway I seriously thought I left a socket or something in the diff. It went pow pow pow crack crack crack, then I said oh snap. Under the vehicle I go, pull the cover off, check for a wrench, socket, hammer, brick, hamster then gerbils. Nothing in the diff... So I added maybe 1/2 bottle of friction modifier (not too much but not tooo little) and by the end of the week it still sounded tight but the crack crack was gone. All in all I'm happy. I’m not sure how long the LSD will last packed so tight but for $65 bucks I don’t mind repacking once a year. The traction is worth it.

Ok, yeah cool

I soaked the clutches in LSD Gear oil for about 20 minutes before I put them in

Used 4 Frictions and 3 steels and stacked them

Shim / Friction / Steel / Friction / Steel / friction / Steel / Friction / Side gear

I defiantly wouldn’t have got another in there without removing the shims and removing material off the ends of the axle as well.

I let it all sit over night before I filled it with oil and drove it and I didn’t get one pop or bang from the rear end

I only had my ½ inch toque wrench handy witch I couldn’t get in the rite position to toque up the Cross shaft Loc bolt. So I hade to use a 10mm ring spanner and just get it as tight as i could.

Funnily enough it’s not at tight as I thought it would or should have been, I don’t know maybe it’s just the Trac Loc Unit, But the LSD in my Mates Jeep was a lot tighter after the rebuild.

Will see how it goes off road next week end, but from playing around on the ramps in the shed soon as you get close to lifting a wheel it all over, but give it a bit of brake and gas together then it grabs enough pull you up so you are balancing on 2 wheels with the other 2 hanging in the air.

Cheers.
