Specifically those with the same transmission as a 96 4.0l 4x4. Mine is still in good shape (knock on wood) but I would like to get a feel for what a rebuild generally costs.

Also, what model trans do I have?

Thanks. :D

Yours is the 4r55e. I have had mine rebuilt three times. Expect to pay between 2k and 2.5k.

Pretty sweet GTP you got there BTW.

You should feel SUPER lucky. These trannys are built for s**t. A tranny cooler and shift kit upon rebuild can help them last longer.

I browsed through your site. Very impressive car.

Thanks, I haven't updated it in a long time. Maybe I'll do that today. :)

I have an Apten chip and I know ther is a small tranny cooler on it. I bought it with 126k... maybe it has already been rebuilt.

You sure that that small cooler isnt for the powersteering?? If its down by the front crossmember, it is for the powersteering, not the tranny.

That's exactly what it is. Thanks for clarifying that for me. :)

I guess I need to invest in a cooler now also. I hope I have not done any damage to it towing without one...

tranny life

I've got 151k on my original tranny. It still pulls smoothly and shifts firmly under a heavy right foot. I have a 97 XLT 2WD and have changed the fluid using Mercon V every 25-30k miles using a power flush, not a drip and fill system. I've already got the $ set aside for a rebuild when needed, but am pleased I'm still going strong on the original.

I paid $2,400 when my 5R55E was rebuilt at 87K miles. I'm at 121K miles and all is well.

$2500 Cdn, with synthetic oil, shift kit and upgraded parts, new solenoids. It wasn't the cheapest price but the shop came across as the most professional during my research. Got 155,000km on original tranny but it was toast. The tranny drives like a dream now, can't believe the difference.
