What I find funny about building your own box(AKA my worlog)

You will want to: PAINT the inside of the box. MDF is not air tight.

Are you serious? MDF is sawdust held together with resin. How could it not be airtight?

Its porous. Try painting it once, see how much soaks in, and if its thin enough, if will soak all the way through....

I've found resin on the inside of the box to work good, my last box I used rubberized undercoating.....

i sanded my mdf a little, and then painted it, and none of the paint soaked in... i still put 3 layers for darkness

face it, if we say its porous it is.

use something to seal it if you want the absolute best results

MDF is pretty much airtight. No tech. its not 100% airtight but it is pretty damn close

If MDF was so bad im sure people in the audio would wouldnt build their boxes out of mdf

Look into spl then, ask how many ppl think its a good idea to treat the inside of the box...? a couple 10ths on the meter may not mean so much to the average person, but could mean the diff between 1st and 3rd...

Nobody said mdf was bad?

but man the drying, waiting time on a can of paint... its long... takes over a day to get the fumes out of the box...

thats why i want my next box to be acrylic... (very pricey though)

MDF is a great material to build boxes out of, it is cheap, easy to cut and is very strong and doesn't chip, sands well but it is not airtight - air will not come rushing thru it but it does leak, after you get all the wood cut and test fitted just spray it with paint and leave it for the night, when you do final assembly go over every joint with liquid nails or silicone sealent.
