what is a Charcoal canister (98 corolla)

My sister's car had the cel light come on and the dealer told her she needs to replace the charcoal canister because it's bad and the engine wasnt getting enough gas.
Can someone tell me what it is and where it should be located?
They want 500 bucks for parts and labor! Does that price sound right? Is it something you could do yourself?

On mine explorer its by the resivors(sp?) and its a black box thing with knobs on the top. From what I was told it recyles the vapors. The explorer one is about $100. I think there is just a couple of tubs that you have to disconnect and reconnect. The install should be very simple.

There has too be an independant shop near you that can take care of the problem. Just walk in. Tell them this is what you were told. See what they will do for you.
