Its part of the security system.

That would be the dusk sensor. If you turn your lights to the auto setting and cover that up, your lights will come on.

Ahh.. thank you, I was thinking it was for the alarm. i saw a explorer with a blinking light there. I didnt know if it went bad or it was something else.
thanks again..

It does work as part of the security system in that...

Its part of the security system.

People outside think it's an alarm system, it's a deterrent. So, it works that way too :D

The blinking LED for the security system is also located in the center of the dash.

You know...I always thought that the dome-shaped sensor was the sun sensor for the automatic climate control. The dusk sensor was usually smaller and not covered by a red globe. I never really looked at mine that closely, but the dusk sensor may be located somewhere else, and this may be the one for the climate control.

I'm going to have to investigate this now...Dammit!

Right in here...

the light didn't show, but...

Part of the security system

I don't have automatic headlights, nor a factory alarm, but the red light is blinking away while my XLT is sitting patiently in the garage right now. It comes on and blinks whenever the key is out of the ignition. It goes off whenever the ignition is on whether or not the motor is running. It works reasonably well as a theft deterent as the causal observer doesn't know if it is an alarm system or not.
