I am driving around with my friends, I turn down the radio to listen to one of them talk about how the Kings will beat the Avalanch in 7 (sucks that they lost), and I hear this high pitched screeching. Usually I know it is comming from someone elses ride, but everytime I hit the brakes it would stop. What is that? Is it my brakes?...but it only does it when I am moving and when I hit my brakes it would stop. You could probably tell I am not much of a motorhead but that is why I got you guys. So wise and all knowing website...what is the answer? I shall sit here meditating for you mighty website.

How many miles do you have on the brakes?

Does the pitch or intensity of the sound increase with increasing rpm's?

I think I have about 20 thousand miles on the brakes. Oh yeah, I have a 96 4dr XLT 4wheel. Could it be the brakes even if it stops sqeaking when I hit the brakes. The rpm's don't really effect the screech. If I move forward it is just a constant screech no matter what speed. I thought it might be the bearings because I was doing this stream crossing and they say you should repack the bearing after you do that kind of stuff, but that was about 3 months ago.

I'd guess the brakes; You may have the wear indicators on the pads. They are little pieces of metal that are attached to the pads and rub against the rotor when the pads get low. Take off the tires and check the pads. If it doesn't have the indicators, it may be the rivets from the pads scraping aginst the metal which would tearing up the rotors. It could be caused(premature pad failure) by the caliper sticking or the slides needing to be greased. Hope you find it.

hey goober.... are there any trails down there in lexington ?

i have an hard time finding some decent off road paths down here in the upstate ... :(

Check dem roters

I would put it on a lift and check out your rotors. I had the same exact problem. I measured my rotor width and found out that it was below what is recommended. What I was told is that your rotors cannot dissipate the heat and produce a high pitch squeal. This squeal stops when you apply the break.
