what is the factory amp for do i need it?

i have a 94 explorer 4 dr xlt i have the back cargo area gutted for i am putting dynamat in right now. i see a silver cheap a$$ looking amp on the right quarter panel side. do i need this and is there a way i can upgrade it. it has 2 wiring harness one on top and one on bottom. i know it will be covered back up but man it just looks cheap and i bet its not rated very high on wattage. any help is useful. thxs:exp:

if you have an aftermarkeyt headunit than buy an amp bypass kit for it... like $15 from crutchfield or best buy....if using the stock hu dont touch it or youll have no speakers.....
