Ok, so I went to put my H.I.D.'s in today and saw this little guy unplugged but no male end to it was found. I recently had someone swap the motor out of 96 ranger to explorer so I'd figure he used my harness. Though not sure ftw this plugs into it looks dusty so its been unplugged for awhile (only did the swap maybe 700 miles ago). It is located on the passenger head light right in front of the air filter.

No one know?

Just looked under my hood. Off of that connector I have a short wiring harness that has 2 plugs on the end of it. The plugs are plugged into a device that has some small vacuum hoses attached to it that are part of HVAC system. Sorry I do not have more technical terms for you. lol!! The device is actually mounted about 6 inches from where your plug is, towards the fender. The vacuum lines running off of it are red.

I don't know if Ford made Explorers without 4WD, but it sounds like the device with the red vacuum lines are solenoids for the actuator on the front axle to engage the 4WD. If yours is 2WD, you wouldn't have a front differential. Just a guess.

I do not know what it is, but here's some pics of mine (4WD '96) with the plug/harness for reference...
