in that mode, if the system detects front wheel slip, it engages 4hi automatically. this can bypassed if you'd like true 2wd, search "brown wire mod" or BWM

So that may explain why it sometimes makes a whining sound and jerks my truck.....if it's not supposed to do that please tell me so I can look into that BWM.......it's making me worried.

Everything is fine. In the 'Comprehenive Brown Wire Mod thread' (hint: search) I explain some of the background info in there. There are plenty of discussions on how the system works too.... search a bit and you'll find tons of reading material. :)

In the mean time, your sounds like it's fine, provided it's not engaging in parking lots and on dry pavement and other situations when it shouldn't be.

Thanks guys, it's friving me nuts, and I'm afraid of some damage.

a friend of mine who has a masters in Automotive Tech said it sounds like it MAY be either the Solenoid or the Switch......but I think the BWM will be my best bet.

Thanks again guys.

I'm searching it now!

There is no solenoid, and if it was the switch, the 4x4 light would be coming on.

they both flash simultaniously

If your 4wd lights are flashing the system is detecting a fault. You need to get it scanned like a check engine light.
