Some people will hate me for this, but flowmasters are know more for their sound than their performance. If you want a high performing quiet (this is a relative term, it isnt stock, but its not loud or obnoxious) muffler, I would look into gibsons.

are gibsons much more expensive then flowmasters and by how much (roughly)

flowmasters

I have been told that you shouldnt put flowmasters on an engine that has high mileage. I have a 95 X that has 120k is in great shape, body and engine wise. I would like to achieve a bit more horsepower and would like to get that nice rumble that you get out of the ford 5.0 V8 that was later installed in new model X's. Can anyone confirm if I would damage my high mileage engine and what do you guys suggest? I have heard that the 40 series is better in sound than the 50 series flowmasters? Will I get noticeable increase horsepower if I install them and will I get the nice throaty sound that I am after. I need some help here guys.
thanks

i have 95k+ and just recently put a flowmaster 40 on there. they guy didn't say that it would damage anything.

my friend just had a gibson catback put on and it was roughly $300 but he didnt install it himself.

i put a 40 series non delta flowmaster on my 92 when it had about 110,000 miles.. It didn't hurt it, only helped performace, so i would say that is probably just a myth...
now a supercharger thats another story

Elite,

How did that non Delta 40 sound? Was it obnoxiously loud? Or is it "just right"? I have a 50 Delta flow now, and although it sounds pretty good, i kind of want it a tad louder. I was told by several people that 40 series would not sound good with 4.0L.

it sounds pretty good, its not loud, i actually wish it was louder. But its got a nice tone to it...but thats me speaking and i like it because i paid for it...hehhehehe :)

but i have had others say its somewhat loud when they are sitting in the back seat...because i have the tail pipe routed out the back of the truck so its got more area of the pipe under the cabin...but its not like overly loud up front

I have dual flowmaster 40 non-deltas on my V8... I wish they were louder.

 oohhh duals, i'm jealous...thats what i should have done in the first place

Im running 50 series Flowmasters on a X with 135,000 mi and the throttle response and sound are wonderful. I also remove my resonator and 1 cat. Muffler, pipe, tip, and installation cost about $170. Im very happy!:D

Thanks alot guys for your suggestions. I have the V6 in my 95 X, did you guys with a V6 still get the good performance and the nice sound? Also do you need to change the filter to a free flow filter to maximize the performance or is it not necessary? And lastly where can I find the best deal on Flowmasters and free flow filters? Thanks again for the help

I dunno about the best place for flowmaster prices (probably a local shop) but www.kustomz.com sells performance intakes for our explorers that work really well for alot less the K&N FIPKs. They cost $90 at KKM's website.

KKM's are good, from what I hear, lots of members swear by the drilled air box with a K&N drop in filter too. It's up to what you feel like doing, from what I hear, an aftermarket airfilter makes the stock sound noticably more agressive, so you might want to start with that, and then work your way to the exhaust.

I have a SUV 50, and it is only loud when I stomp on it.
It has real sweet tone between 2,000 rpm and 3,500 rpm. But not loud. Very noticable differance in performance too.
