I just picked up a new used 1997 5.0 Exoplorer with 77000 miles. My wife and I love it. I do not yet have a repair manuel so I was wondering what parts should be replaced at around 80000 miles ? And what name brand to buy?
Also I can hear a knocking or clunking sound coming from the front end when I go over bumps. I dont know if it`s the shocks, ball joints or something loose...? any suggestions would be great. It also pulls to the right more than I like but I think it just needs an alighment?

What kind and name brand of parts should I get???

Spark plugs
Shocks
air filter
fuel filter
synthetic oil
any other parts...

Thanks dwade277

Tranny fluid and filter
PCV (so easy to change, literally takes 15 seconds)
O2 sensors should be going anytime now......

that creaking is prob your inner ball joints I believe, I had mine replace not too long ago, no more creaking since then. I have NGK plugs and Bosch wires. I would go with the factory brand fuel filter when replacing something like that. As for the air filter Purlator makes one for a reasonable price. You can get that at Pep Boys or Strauss I don't know of any other brands for replacement filters except K&N. K&N is a great filter but from personal experience I would not invest too much in to a high milage ride.

Its a good idea to change all fluids on a used vehicle. Also check out this. Dead Link Removed

Also check brakes, radiator & differential fluids.

The clunking may be the sway bar links. Mine were replaced under recall a year ago and no more clunking. I had 2 ball joints replaced also, but it only fixed the clucn for 3 months. it was not worth the $700 for the 2 ball joints if it was just going to come back 3 months later. I would get the sway bar links checked to make sure they were replaced under the recall first. if thats not it, then have the ball joints inspected, but they are expensive.....

In terms of engine stuff, I use Amsoil Full synthetic oil in everything (engine tranny front and rear axle transfercase) I use Bosch Plus 4 plugs and bosch premoum wires, K&N high flow air filter, etc. if you want more info, please feel free to ask!

Does the 97 have sealed wheel bearings? If not would also have the front wheel bearings re-packed if this has not been done before.

95 and newer 4WD has selaed front bearings
