Since the 06+ v8s are the same as the mustang, which mustang mods will work on this engine for more power and mpgs? Thinking of pulleys and tb, maybe mass air. What other mods are available for this thing that really work?

I have done (or plan on doing):

SCT Xcal3 93oct Perf. (Tuned by Justin Starkey)
Nocturnal Perf. Intake w/ MAF & Filter PKG
FM 50-series SUV Perf. Muffler
MotoBlue 5pc Underdrive Pulley Set (no longer available - I recommend STEEDA)
Zabteck Throttle Body
Charge motion delete plates

How about the ignition?
Anyways.... I had a coil go out on me a few days ago... I bought a set of Accel COP for the Ex. Will post up later on how it runs... Maybe even a video.

Sounds good. Let us know how it runs

Well it turns out $203 for the coils off of Amazon and $97 for the spark plugs at Autozone will not only take the big bad engine light away, But it will make your Explorer run a hell of a lot better. My Ex will burn out by just standing on the gas, no need for the break anymore. Expensive, but worth it.

What kinds of plugs did you use?

Plugs:
Autozone:
Autolite HT1.
$11.99 ea.

Coils:
Amazon:
ACCEL 140033-8 3 Super Coil Kit
$203.61

The Ex will break the tires loose at the stomp of the gas... no need for breaks anymore. I'm happy.

Let me know if you see any mileage improvements.

I don't think that's possible... I tend to drive it like I stole it everyday... But I think I will keep an eye on it just for instructional purposes.

Another topic....

Has anyone removed only the resonator on the '06-'09 Explorers? I want a little more sound, but not sure how it would sound without the resonator.

thanks for your help.

06 V8 Resonator

I put on FM 50 series muffler and removed the resonator. Waaaay too loud! I put the resonator back on and it has a nice growl but now I can still hear the stereo.

Remove the resonator and install a 70 series FM;) That what I did and it sounds perfect. (I have a 2V motor though) Here is my vid and I also have one of just kind of driving around.

I dig it... I thinking of trying out the exhaust with the stock muffler and removing the resonator, and if I don't like it, then on comes a 70 series Flowmaster.

Thanks for all of your vids. I should take one of my stock exhaust.

I wish I had taken one of my stock and first exhaust mod to compare to now. The first exhaust was with the resonator gone, 3" exhaust into a 40 series FM dumped:D Hella loud and sounded great at WOT, but everyday driving it sucked. So then I went to the 70 series FM with 2.5" exhaust exited out the back. Toned down quite a bit and it's perfect for me. Good luck and looking forward what you do!

I just wish it was my Explorer, It's my "wife's." So she has a say in what goes on with it.

She has given me the green light to upgrade the muffler though

Same with me. Just want a deep tone thats not too loud. Thinkin magnaflow.

Gibson. I had Magnaflow on my '97 Cobra, and also on my '96 Ex 5.0 for a short period. Hated it. More drone than Flowmaster, and not nearly as good a tone.

I put the Gibson on the '06, and like it a lot. So does my wife; she drives it more than I do. Great tone, no drone, relatively inexpensive, nice looking. There's a sound clip on their website.

So after a few weeks use, what's the verdict? Any issues? I picked up some HT1 plugs and have the spark plug extractor tool just in case of any broken plugs. I'm still in limbo about getting the Accel super coil set.

Survey saysssss. I have noticed a crisper throttle response and a little better fuel mileage. By only 3-5, but every little bit helps right. Would I recommend them, I say yes. for 300 Bucks, not bad.

Are those plugs a colder heat range than stock? Reason I ask is cause I bought a set of Accel coils for an 02 Mustang GT I use to own and ran into issues with em burning the electrodes on the stock plugs. I'm just wondering if it's necessary to run colder plugs in combination w/ the Accel coils.
