I was wondering if anyone had any recomendations on what shocks to buy to replace OEM's. I have a 99 XLT with 105,000 miles. I do some light trail off roading and some trailer towing.
I was looking at the Rancho 5000 but have heard mixed reviews.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I currently have Rancho 9000x shocks on my '99. I have tried several other brands and they have all fallen short when compared to the 9000s. It's the adjust ability that I really like about them.

Good luck in your quest ....

to me a comfortable ride was most important, and handling also. thats why i went with monroe sensatracs. they are exactly what i need. as for off-road use, i really couldn't tell ya how they would hold up. i don't do much off-roading.

i have monroe reflexes and i love them, they have a good amount of miles on them and are holding up great. tow a boat in the summer with the occasional trail ride and tehy are nice all around.

we are also looking into the Rancho 5000s for my dads. his truck has 78k on it and the stock shocks are shot. so whats the word on these?

Excellent shocks. They just don't have the adjustably of the 9000x.

yeah knew that. but my dad does not want to spend more then $200. so thats why we where looking at the 5000s. thanks!

I am also looking at the 5000s, will they be able to handle some minor offroad abuse? Also will they make my explorer ride rough? Thats what i really want a rough rider unlike 99% of these sissy newer suvs that now ride like cars, wtf.

im sure they will hold up to off-roading(owners wanna pipe in?) we really dont care how it rides(hopfully kinda nice). we just wanna get rid of the whooping it does after going over a larage bump(and it rodes like a lumber wagon now). the stock shocks are just shot. sense we pretty much decided on the 5000s where thinking by the end of the month we should have a set. i will give a good review on them.

I don't like the sensa-tracs and wouldn;t recommend them to anybody. They didn't last any longer than the OEMs or the Gabriel (made by Monroe) Gas Ryder LTs they replaced. I'm putting a set of Rancho RSXs on as soon as they arrive. 4wheel parts has them buy three get one free right now. Hopefully they'll be there when I get home today!

I've got the RSXs on my F-150 and never had a better shock on a truck. True, they're not adjustable, but aside from when they're worn out, when was the last time you said, "Gee, I sure wish my shocks were valved differently?"
