Matching intake and exhaust ports to the gasket is an old hot rodder's trick......so, it can't be all that bad.

It LOOKS like your pics show, that the matching is pretty darn close (2,4). Then, you could always smooth out the rough inner tubes so that they are slick.

Though, I must admit, that I haven't done it myself.

There maybe a book available that talks about 4.0L OHV engine mods.....search the site for the title. Or is it out of print?

yeah i found this intake out at pick an pull for about $10 i think. so i thought it wouldn't be a bad grab. um when you mention pictures 2,4, you mean thoes would be the ones you would mess around with? i was thinking i could pick up a bit with an extention so i could clean out the insides with my drill. its like a brush with steel brisols. but i was wondering if i modified this would i have to make any changes to the top of the engine?

Well........pic 2 & 4 is what looks like (I haven't taken mine apart) where the air would be going through. As for the other pics.....looks like just vac and valve stuff.

Anyway, as for having to do additional mods........IF you were to smooth out some roughness......most likely not. But, IF you could get it to flow that much better......who knows. Alot of old hot rodder stuff was just done as cheap mods......don't KNOW IF anyone could say I gained ____ HP w/ the mod......though, it would make sence that they would help the flow and thus HP......and did I mention FREE.

Same with guys who match their carbs to the manifold......and polish runners.

Is it worth the effort? I don't have evidence........but, when you tell your friends about it.......

number 2 would be the only one worth your time, but in that its not going to do you any good unless you port the lower intake and the cylinder heads!

actually, the upper intake (shown above) isnt very restrictive at all. Look at the lower intake, you will see what really is restricting the intake... then after that look at the heads =)

<--- Look at my avatar... thats what you want.

You wont gain much HP porting the upper intake alone...

Have you done porting work before? or do you plan on having a shop do it?

You shouldnt attempt to port your own heads/intake without buying a spart set to practice on. Not only that, if you dont have flow-bench, you more then likley just going to make things worse.

Creager.............he's got it............his avatar shows it.

This is my 100th post so, I have to at least............Sound intelligent ;) .

lol, yes i have a spare intake, i haven't pulled the top end apart yet. i would love to be able to get another block and piece it together but i know that ford engines are really exspensive to build~

and then would it be worth it?? all that money into stock parts?? they dont really make to many performance parts for the 1st generations.

if you want to go as far as ported your intake/heads... look into a cam from Comp Cams.

Comp cam makes two for the 4.0L OHV. The 410, which will give you a gain of around ~17-20 hp. also the 422 cam which will give you a gain of ~20-22 hp. The 422 cam overlaps, so raw gas is spit into the exhaust. This is not legal in most states. It is for sure illegal in California =)

You would also need to convert to dual valve springs for the 422 cam. The 410 cam it isnt nessesary.

North carolina just passed a law which made the 422 cam legal for me (and any car/truck older then 96)
