I went down today to have a set of 31x10.50s, that I already own, put on my '91 4WD Exp. The guy at Discount Tire was very nice, but said they were not allow to install these tires on my X because of all the fallout from all the SUV rollovers, etc. So, now I am just going to take the tires off the X and take both sets down and just have the tires put on the wheels, that way they won't see which car they are going on. But, if they ask, what should I tell them they are going on? It will need to be a truck of some sort with the same bolt pattern. I was thinking about just saying they are going onto a Ranger, but I don't know if they have the same bolt patterns. I know someone else here had the same problem when they tried to order from Tire Rack.

What a bunch of %&*()(%$&*! You would think they would jsut have an "I accept responsility" waiver form you you could fill out!

Id just take it somewhere else where they would do it. Sounds like a lot of unnecessary work on your end.

I had the same trouble with my X. No one around here would touch the 33x12.5's I wanted to mount. THe shop that was doing the lift for me ended up taking them to another shop and told them it was for a Ranger. Yeah, it's a pain in the a$$. It sucks that this country is so lawsuit happy that everyone is only looking to cover their own a$$.

Most Discount tire stores will do it on an Explorer. They are one of the only store chains that will usually do it. I'd just find another Discount Tire.

Step 1... Talk to the manager.. Make sure that is really the position they want to take.. (e.g.. not to sell/install a set of tires on a vehicle that is setup for those tires)..

(I am assuming you not trying to fit passenger car tires on an X)..

Once you do that.. and get the store number and the manager name and time of the day.... Call Discount Tire Consumer Affairs.. @ 1-888-774-6560

Tell them you want to know the corporate policy on selling/mounting tires...

Most likely they will get back to you.. It took them 1 hour to get back to me...

At this point you will get a chance you explain what happened.. Be nice.. tell them what happened.. who you talked to.. the store number and the time...

Also, mention that you are asking for the corporate policy before you post the outcome of this on the Premier Ford Explorer message board.

I did this, and the Corporate office called the store.. and made sure they understood what the policy was..

In the meantime I had already gone to another discount tire and bought my tires.. But I went back to the store that refused when I got my tires siped (the closest Discount with a tire siping machine).. They had not problem with me that time..

Let us know what happens...

It was Discount Tire that first turned me down. Even though I bough 4 wheels and tires from them, they wouldn't sell me any more. They did end up doing the tire mounting, but only after a guy they knew from another shop told them it was for a Ranger.

I got the same song and dance at Costco. They were not allowed to mount any tires that were not stock size. I bought the tires unmounted and took them to the 4x4 shop that did the lift. They took care of me. My regular mechanic would have mounted them for me but his machine would not balence a 33 inch tire. My advice is to take your business somewhere it is appreciated.

I am going to take the wheels to my local shop tomorrow instead. I guess it will be worth the extra $10 to save the run around and yet more trouble.

Ironically, last night when my wife got home with the X she came in and said "I think one of the tires is hissing". I went and looked and, sure enough, the front left tire had developed a crack down within the tread. It was about two inches long. Very strange, because that part of the tire is pretty well protected, and sure does not look like it was caused by any outside influence, just developed. The tires are far from bald, so wear isn't a cause either. On the same side, rear tire, a round piece of sidewall about 2" diameter is starting to seperate, which is the reason we tried getting them swapped in the first place.

So now I'm thinking, if one of our tires blows out and causes us to roll, we will have a pretty good lawsuit because, hey, we tried getting them changed (tires that we knew were dangerous) but they refused!:D

The discount tire store told me the same.
I went down there asking what tire size they wold use on my 20x8's and they said we cant install anythig but OE on the EXPLORER. But I could bring the rim and the tire or buy the tire there and they will mount it and I would have to take it home and install in myself.( That would be the easy part though.)

Scott & Xlt-Rated,
Are either one of you going to call the corporate office to find out what the official policy is? I would but since I'm not the one who was told this, I shouldn't be the one calling.

If this isn't the official policy then don't stand for it.. Get them to install the tires..

If we don't stand up for ourselves, soon no one will install tires or we will run into this every time.. and frankly, my time is worth too much to have to drive around to try to find a shop that will install it.

When I talked to discount tire corporate, they understood that if they were to not install tires on Explroers that they would lose customers and sales (not just selling to explorers, but to entire families etc)..

Scott, what brand and size are these tires?

Taking off the wheels sounds like a pain to me... but then again mine is my regular driver. I'd just find another place. Around me in Westchester, NY I have 2 Mavis's within 5 miles, just to name 2. I'd take your business elsewhere!

I feel totally stupid. I meant to look before I got rid of them, but everybody in my house has been sick, keeping us up all night, and it just slipped my mind. It was an unknown (to me) Japanese brand. I am pretty sure I would recognize it if I saw it again, because I actually tried researching them on the net about a year ago. I honestly had every intention of writing down the name so I could let you guys know about them...sorry.

On the other hand, I jsut ended up pulling them off and taking them to my local shop. I live in a small town, so I kind of wanted to keep the money local anyway. I like the way the 31x10.50s fill up the wheelwells and I am infinitely more confident in these Pirelli Norsemans than I was with the old ones. I don't anticipate any trouble with them rubbing...my wife has it out on them this morning for the first time, so we will find out.

I still plan on calling Discount Tire though. They definitely lost my sale this time. I have been a good customer of theirs, because their service and prices have always been good to me (for a B&M). I was planning on gettin some Yokohama Geolander AT+ IIs from them for my other truck, but now I'm not so sure. I just don't see why they don't have a waiver you can sign?
