ok...when i have my truck in drive..and im sitting at a light or something..it seems like the idle is too low....its around 600 rpm....and it has a wierd sound to it...

but if i keep my foot on the break and give it a little gas to bring it up to around 800 rpm or so it sounds fine..

i changed my plugs and wires...to platinum plugs and 8mm wires and it didnt solve the problem (if it is one)......while in park though it sounds fine..

anyone know what the deal is?......i read somewhere that it could have to do with the MAF or something..and to try cleaning it...but i have no idea what that is..lol

if anyone can help id appreciate it...

I beleive you're referring to the Mass Airflow Sensor and it can be cleaned with carb/choke cleaner from the posts I read - that may be your problem

thats what it is the mass air flow sensor...but i dont even know where it is...i only had the truck since january...so im still learning where all my **** is on the truck......

thanks though.....do you know where it is and how to clean it?.......

anyone know what the idle should be?

My idle is around 600 to 500 in drive. It does seem low and I believe it used to be higher. Don't notice any performance problems just a low idle so I don't worry about it. To find out how to clean your MAS do a search, there are a lot of forums on this subject.

h19,

i've had a 94 since 70k ( i now have 101k) and it has an excellent service record and has always idled at 550-600 in gear ever since i got it. i havnet had any real problems with it.

When I got my X the dealer installed a new MAF and O2 sensor to cure a ping under load. Solved the problem completely.

My idle speed, in gear, is around 600 and has been this way all the time. So I don't think doing any thing with your MAF will give you a higher idle. This seems to be where it wants to be.

Regarding idle though, I have noticed that the idle will increase to about 800, in gear, when the air conditioner cuts in. This fluctuation of speed with the air conditioner on will almost allow me to drive on the level at 30 mph without touching the gas. This does not occur when the air is off so I am guessing that this is required to turn the pump.

thanks for the replies...i didnt think it was a problem really its more of the fact its annoying.....it sounds like its a problem....does your guys sound like its idling low..if u know what i mean...cause if i step on the gas to get it to like 700 rpms..the noise stops......

maybe its just all in my head..lol

Mine doesn't seem to make any wierd noise. I mean it does sound different than when it is in park, but it isn't wierd. Just normal sounds of an automatic in gear at a stop.

I must admit though this is only about the 3rd automatic I've ever owned, even as a second vehicle which this is, so I'm no pro on the sounds auto trannys make.

Around here, we have Air-care emissions testing yearly.

It used to be vehicles that were idling above 1000 rpm was too much, and sometimes was considered untestable.

My families Explorers all idle around 700-800 with no weird sounds.
