I've taken the fan out before just don't remember what size the fan nut was.

I'm thinking 1 1/4? Nothing I have is big enough.(don't know what I did with the correct size one) I did search I didn't get an answer on just the nut size. I have the clutch removal tool.

Thanks

I've always used the rent a tool program from autozone. I can tell you that its the same size nut that is on the ford 300 straight 6 motor (I've yet to find a fan clutch tool that said 4.0 on it.... they all said ford 300 i6)

I have the tool so no need for me to rent anything. I just can;t find the fan nut wrench. I have no idea what a 300 straight 6 is.

I always wondered about this been trying to find the 4.0 kit but all I find say 5.0L on them. Can't even find a 300 inline 6 kit.

I thought you were looking for the special tools. The special tools are a two piece set.. One really big wrench looking thing is used to hold the pulley (it grabs onto the bolts)..

The 2nd is what you put on the fan clutch nut.

They make multiple sized fan clutch removal tool sets. The set for the 4.0 is the same set you use for a Ford 300 cubic inch inline 6 cylinder engine.

When I had to do this, I rented one from AutoZone, and all I told them was it was a Ford 4.0L V-6, and they went and got me the one I needed....1 big 'Spanner' wrench that grabs the fan/waterpump by the bolt heads, and another wrench to turn the nut.

Your radiator fan shroud will tell you which direction to turn the nut. I own 3 Explorers, and 1 says Turn Left, the other 2 say Turn right.

You guys are not getting me. I have the tool kit already but I am missing the wrench for just the nut. I have the pulley piece.

Edit: I found the rest of the kit so never mind. I still have no idea what size that nut is though. The wrench doesn't have a size on it.

I was looking through an old thread the other day about removing the fan clutch nut and said it was 1 7/16 in.

I searched as well, & got 1 1/4" so don't know. I'm going to size the wrench up & see what I get.

For some reason, 46mm sticks out in my mind...not positive though

Its 1 7/16. I just replaced my water pump this week used an adjustable wrench and a strap wrench

I have a special tool at work for that fan nut...........a air hammer with a blunt bit.LOL

Sorry about the lack of information

It seems to me that previous comments attempting to answer your question are failing to understand exactly what you are asking. Every answer has been related to you going to the part store and renting the crappy poorly designed fan clutch removal wrench set. In my personal opinion, I hate the removal tool kit. They are outrageously expensive and poorly designed in my opinion. If you are simply trying to find a good wrench that will fit the fan clutch "nut" and you already have a backup wrench or something else to do the same job of holding the fan clutch while you brake the nut loose, then I can answer your question the best I can.
Most of the clutch fan nut sizes that I have come across on both Ford and GMC vehicles have been size 1''7/8. I recently replaced a water pump in an early 2000s model Ford 1 Ton Turbo diesel engine and the clutch fan nut size was 1''7/8. The newer model Chevy Vortec engines that I have taken apart and repaired have all been the same size as well. The other size that I have encountered have all been smaller than 1''7/8, but I cannot remember exactly what size wrench they required specifically. However, a good 1''7/8 wrench should do the job for you just the same. That size seems to me to be the most common.
Tip: If you ever have trouble holding onto the fan clutch while you break the nut loose, these boogers can be quite tight and a pain in the butt to hold well enough to apply a fair enough amount of force to break the nut loose, I have a helpful little trick that might come in handy for anyone reading this post. Take the drive belt completely off of the engine where the surface of the water pump pulley is bair. Then, get a small sized ratchet strap and secure one end somewhere on the inside of the fender, towards the top of the engine. Then, bring your strap down and make one wrap around the water pump pulley and bring the other end of the strap to the top of the engine and secure it to the opposite fender. Tighten the ratchet strap up good and tight making sure that the strap is not binding up on anything in its path that will break when it is tightened up. This may just give you that little bit more hold on the fan clutch that you need to break the nut loose.

Good info, I hope you understand that the original question was posted 8 years ago.

Not only that, but it was pretty good information. I don't know why JanBAuto's first post *ever* on this site is titled, "sorry about the lack of information". That's not too nice to the guys that posted way back then. Careful reading shows that the OP's question was, in fact, answered.

:D :D :D :salute:

Hi all,

10 years later I needed the same info. It is ok for all the references to rent/buy/borrow the wrench but that does not address his question. The guys who had wrench nearby could have taken a ruler and measured it or caliper on the nut. When you or I need the measurement number anything else is filler. Glad to see a forum devoted to Exploders. Had 2 and one blew tranny. The other was a combo of me going into creek at ranch, getting pushed sideways and aluminum casing hit rock dumped water into transfer case, tranny and bent some shafts as well as filling engine with water. Wasn't worth new/rebuild engine, transfer case, tranny, etc... They aren't a bad rig but I need more mountain goat capability that a paved road oriented car doesn't quite do. Still have F350 4x4 4 door 'cowboy caddy'. Is a 91 with barely running 460. Needs at least top end rebuild and possibly new crank/bearings. Found rod bent in Z shape laying inside the plenum after ugly noise when starting. Is for sale cheap and located in San Jose, CA. Gmail account generally finds me. Thanks again for nut size and enjoy.

I'm not sure if LstVlly is A) introducing him/her self B) ranting about exploding things or C) trying to sell a Ford that he/she exploded? :dunno:

BTW, I thought the Ford that exploded a lot was the Pinto? I know the whole Ford/Firestone thing led to Explorers having their tummies rubbed but I didn't hear of many going boom.
