I think im in need of a new thermostat, mine works but i think its set for a too high of temp. If the temp guage was 0-100 0 being cold and 100 being over heating, it constantly reads aroudn the 80 mark which seems a bit high for me and is even higher when i sit in trafic or just start it up warm. Its a 92 4door 4wd the only engine mod is a KKM filter. I don't know if its OEM or not but what is the temp range i should ask for when i go to get one? thnx

I believe its the 191-195 one. Dont go under 191. Also remember Fords always run a little warm. Its just there nature. From what I have undersood as well is the X's temp reading are not accurate anyways. But you are prob in need of a new one. Mine helped. While you are at it mine as well replace top hose too.

Like kandtholman says. Stick with the thermostat your 92 was designed for. I believe it is 195 degree, but any autoparts store will know and have the right one. Now would be a good time to replace your stat and do a flush and fill while you are in there.

I think it was very informative it included the following information:

Have you checked to see if the system is full of coolant? Mine was a little low and when sitting in traffic the temp guage would climb up higher then I wanted.. I then checked to see if it was full of coolant and it was low.. I havent yet found where the coolant went for it to be low.. but thats another story.. NOTE: never check the coolant when engine is hot.. let engine cool before attempting to take the radiator cap off... otherwise due to pressure and steam you could result in a some scary ass burns..

Since we're on the topic of thermostats, can someone briefly explain why it's important to change to a 180 degree thermostat (or something like that) when getting a performance chip? Thanks.

You only get the 180 or 165 Tstat with a performance chip if thats what the performance chip wants.

You need the motor to be warmed up. The computer (chip) is what determines when it is warmed up. If the chip considers anything under 190 as not warm then it is going to throw extra fuel into the mix thinking it still needs to warm up.

When you put in a performance chip they nomrally consider the engine warm when it reaches 180 and on some as low as 165. They do that becuase if the motor gets warm enough it will ping due to the difference in timing/fuel curve.

So... you put in the temp t-stat the computer/chip wants.

Hope that clear is up some..

That makes sense, thanks for the clarification.:)
