What to do with '97 Explorer...

but first I want to ask what will you need it for?

All of the above. Daily driver, x-country trips with kids + dog, ski-car, light off-road use on trails suitable for stock 4x4 e.g. http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=103

Part of my issue with dropping coin on a new(er) vehicle right now is there is a lot of uncertainty in my fiduciary life right now that I think will go away in a couple of years. Might have more kids, trying to sell a house (might need to bring sizable chunk of money to table), and a bunch of other things I'd rather not post about. In 2 or 3 years I should have better stability and know exactly what sort of vehicle I need.

So, after reading this thread I am beginning to like the idea of a well maintained 99-01 with lower miles - like say 120-140K. Can be had cheap, relatively reliable vehicle (at least in my experience) if I can find one that was babied. Would likely get 3-4 years out of such a truck which is all I need right now.

Thanks guys, this thread has been very helpful in sorting this out in my head - hopefully, the OP finds it helpful too :)

You would be surprised that you can find one around 100k for the lower end price and then you still have money to put into the bank or do any light repairs to your 97 to keep as a backup vehicle.
