The 'tone rings' are the toothed steel ring that the sensor (hall effect sensor) detects its magnetic field.
You can see if the toothed ring is knackered by removing the ABS sensor and looking in the sensor hole. Turn the hub and make sure it is complete (no teeth missing. Also make sure you don't have a load of crap between the teeth (grease + metal particals from a failing bearing.
Odds are the sensor was either damaged when you did the ball joint (pulling on the wire when getting the drive shaft out, or could simply need re-seating back in the Hub. Make sure it has a clean mounting as the distance between the toothed wheel and the sensor head is quite critical.
