What trans do I have? And more...

Doing some work on the 2002 4.6 liter 2 wheel drive this coming month... I am confused though as to what trans I have. Looking at Rock Auto and other places, they put a time from before 03-2002 or after that. My beast was made on 01-2002 so I think I have the 5R55s. Is that correct? Or do I have the 5R55w?

Some things I need to know:
Once I drain the fluid and replace the filter, do I have a fill plug on the end of the trans near the output shaft? I thought I saw a diagram somewhere on one of the posts...
Also...... Should I do any solenoid replacement? I do have a funky little rpm thing going on around gear 1-3 at times
Also...... Is the current pan gasket reusable and if not, what filter gasket is best for this trans?
Lastly..... It is Mercon V, correct?

You have either a 5R55W or E and they will tell for sure, a lot of parts are interchangable on the two.

http://autorepair.about.com/library/faqs/bl066i.htm --This links a great description of how the oil is removed/replaced. You'll have to makeshift some kind of pump to replace the oil..or buy one for 30 or 40 bucks..

Absolutely replace the solenoid block!! I replaced the valve body as well..Yes the pan gasket is re-usable and Merc-V is the correct oil.

As for your 1-3 rpm situation...Is your engine light on? You may have a loose or broken intermediate band. You can try to tighten it (I will explain how if you are interested) but if its broken---Oh Boy..Gotta drop the tranny and partially disassemble to replace a 20 dollar band!! I am right in the middle of doing mine as we speak. It's not so bad because I have access to a lot of tools and like working on stuff. If your a mechanic type person I can get you a bunch of info if your game to tackle it..
