you mean the suspension? i-beam design if thats what your wondering, or do you mean the 4wd system like Morrisey said?

Twin I beam w/ Dana 44 parts, be more specific

Dana 35

The front axle is a Dana 35 TTB- (twin traction Beam) axle with either automatic or manual locking hubs from the factory.
The 4wd system is a part time, shift on the fly (either push button electirc shift, or lever operated manual shift)

oops, sorry about that, was thinking about my bronco.

Were there many made with the manual hubs/transfer case?

No, but I dont know the percentage with/without. Maybe 3-5%?
I tried to order one back in 90 and my Ford dealer tried like hell to talk me out of it- said he wouldnt be able to sell it if I backed out of the deal. He did a good job too I ended up with the Navajo with the "touch-drive" case, and auto hubs.

Just about everyone on this site wants the manual TC now and they seem to be hard to find- removes the maintainance problem with the shift motors. I want one. The manual hubs are a popular aftermarket replacement (FYI- warn was the OEM for the manuals) for the autos- cheaper than replacing the autos and a bit more reliable if you use 4x for more than snow and the occasional dirt road.
