Long live the first generationers. 2002 and newer are truly 4x4 minivans.

I will start off by saying that I did not make my decision on thinking about which of the years listed was more real. Instead, I just chose my favorite generation: the first generation.

They're not perfect by any means, but to me, they have a style all of their own that I've fallen in love with.

None. Early ones are glorified station wagons, and later ones are glorified minivans.

How about dem apples?

i would rather drive a station wagon than a mini van. lol

"Real Explorers"

Two things stand out in this thread. First, the poll is biased. period. there is no "all of the above". Talk about polarization. Second, mini-vans have front wheel drive. I know, because I drive one at work. If, and probably when, thank you Ford, the Explorer name and concept get tagged to a front drive cross-over, think EDGE, then the Explorer will become a glorified mini-van. The Explorer is real, whether it gets modified and goes off-road, or stays civilized and travels highways only. All are real Explorers!

speaking of which anyone heard that the Escapes are front wheel drives. the 2wd have front wheel drive and the 4x4's have front wheel drive all the time then when the 4x4 kicks in (all electroic) then the back wheels get power too

Hard to say, maybe the real explorers are the 95 and later ones, whereas the 1st gen ones are more like real trucks, solid axle rear, composite solid axle front, ladder frame, steering gear instead of rack and pinion. who knows, to each his own, but I'm a sucker for 1st gens, cuz they're easily fixed, and look like no other truck/SUV/glorified "insert name".

I feel that the 91-94 Expo's are more of a real deal truck than any of the others. I don't think any of them as minivans...but I would say that they are more station wagonish. I do know that even though all expo's are capable, the first gen's are the best off road and built to take more of a beating. Like the front knuckles are joints instead of a booted knuckle like a front wheel drive car. I have seen sticks rammed through them and bust the boot. That and I like real bumbers on my trucks. I don't realy care for a bumper cover. Real bumpers can push and shove without getting ripped, torn, jabbed, or scratched like a painted cover would.

I own and both a 91 Sport 4wd 5spd and an 03 XLT 4wd Auto. I think the newer ones appeal more to luxury and comfort where the older ones appeal more people who want a vehicle to abuse. I use my 91 with stock suspension on 31's for trails and things of that nature. I take my g/f to out to dinner in the 03. But all in all i think the 91's pwn all because they have less computer to muddle them, they come with stickshifts, they have manual t-cases, and are easily modified to fit larger tires. BTW i dont think the 03's come with manual trans/t-cases correct me if im wrong.

What yr. Ex real Ex?

I feel the 1st gen. is the only "real" Ex, all others are different shaped and all. Besides the newer ones just kept getting smaller too, so the 2nd & 3rd gens are sorta "mini-Explorers" I think. :)

They {Ford} also tried to "city-fy" the Ex after the 1st gen. was made...........all the fancy tire and wheel combos, etc...........make them look like a car, etc. :p:
