I REALLY need to replace the GEM on my 96 X. Its causing all sorts of not so fun issues... But ive been reading that the dealership needs to flash some info on the replacement one before you can put it in, and i read somewhere about if you dont do this the gem will lock and be unusable, and im just generally confused. Does anyone know what really has to happen to replace a GEM? Will a junkyard one work?

a junkyard one will work as long as it has all the accessories it's suppose to. Like if the program in the GEM isn't equpped with like rear defrost or something, and you have it - don't expect it to work. Modules aren't really "plug and play" anymore. They are vehicle specific, program specific, powertrain specific, and even VIN specific.

Thats what im worried about :/

Im trying to avoid buying a new one from the dealer, and having the dealer program it (if its even needed.) This really sucks. Now i gotta dump a whole bunch more money in to my truck for something thats broken and for once its not my fault :(

Just got off the phone with ford. a New GEM for a 96 4x4 4.0L is $342 and it does NOT need to be programmed, it just swaps right in... So it looks like a GEM from any 96 4.0 4x4 will work

oh and the part number is f77z14b205ea (had to call them back to get that)
