i was about to do my exhaust but ran short on the $$$ . so this is what the question is, whats the difference in the mandrel bent tubing than the stock . i want to put the flowmaster 40 series muffler on there and then i guess keep my same pipe? would i notice that much diff. if i did or didnt change the pipe out?

Hey-
The mandrel-bent tubing is less restrictive. Regular "crimp-type" tubing is bent with lots of small kinks in it, which gives you a bit more backpressure than mandrel. It makes a pretty big difference in an engine blowing out a lot of air, but in the 4.0 it won't. If you change your pipe to a bigger one you won't regret it.

Luke,
well what is the size of the stock pipe? and what size do you suggest ?so i guess i should go with mandrel bent pipes and flowmaster 40 series with 2 3/4" pipe? i dont know any tips or opinions ? thanks

I'm pretty sure the stock piping is 2" from the converter back. I would run some mandrel 2.5" pipe with the flowmaster 40. I have that setup and it did give me a decent increase in power. My brother has an Explorer with the same flowmaster, but with 2.25" pipe. Mine sounds better Dead Link Removed so I give the extra 1/4" of pipe diameter the credit.

The exhaust is 2 1/4" into the muffler and 2" out. The factory exhaust is already mandrel bent. The only thing is that if you are changing to an aftermarket 2 1/4" muffler, you will at the very least need to change the talipipe. If you go to a larger diameter tubing you will need to change the intermediate pipe and the tail pipe.

Technically Velveeta isn't REALLY cheese... it's a cheese food...
The stuff that other cheeses eat... I guess.
