Sup people, my name is Joe, I'm in the market for an explorer 4x4 4door. Not sure what to look for or stay away from so that's why I joined. Looking to spend around 5k for a decent ride. My other rides include a 03 Lightning and 06 CSRT8. Any info and pic's is much appreciated

will do, so what do I stay away from? Any specific years that had common issues?

The 95 had some computer related issues since they were getting ready to switch to OBD-II from EEC-IV, and used an electronic 4R55E with the older EEC-IV system. There was a "dummy" OBD-II test port that was not connected to anything. The 97 & 2001 have extra sensors on the 5R55E transmission. If you want to get a second generation, look for a 98, 99 or 2000. The 5.0L is a good engine, and is better suited for towing. The gas mileage isn't too much diffferent than the 4.0L.

what's the actual mpg's on an explorer, I heard some people getting 12-14 mpg's out of a v6 and that's why they traded them in when cash for clunkers was going on

get a v8, its a much better engine and you only lose a few mpg.

V8 was introduced in '96. He said he wants a '95. That being said, I'd expand my search beyond '95 just for that reason if it were me.

sorry, I want a 95 and up model

Celly, what would you estimate your 5.0L does as far as MPG? One thing that I wanted to say to the original poster is that if you are looking for a better MPG rating, then get a 2WD instead of a 4WD, a SOHC instead of an OHV, stock size tires, no lift, and a computer tune.

Mike:

All I can say is "it varies" and depends on seasonal factors.

Around the city, I get 12-13 in winter and 14-16 in summer. On highway, I get 18-21 in summer and probably 2-3 less in winter (haven't done a winter road trip for a while to evaluate). Winter gas really sucks the mileage down. I always dread when the stations switch over.

You can definitely get better mileage if you're easy on the throttle. Unfortunately with my mods and custom tuning, it's hard from me to lay off the throttle. I've always had a heavy foot no matter what I've driven.

I've got AWD. I definitely recommend it if you've got winter to deal with. I have snow tires and with the AWD, no amount of bad weather holds me back.

I had a SOHC Sport before the EB and mileage was similar. The Sport was 4WD and had similar mods except aftermarket headers.

The gear ratio in the differential might make a small difference too. It seems like an average overall rating would be 3.73. 4.10 is more like a tow package. My 88 has a 3.45.

My EB has 3.73. Sport had 4.1.
