RFR2212 - That's great mileage for the explorer. The fact is that the V8 just doesn't have to work as hard to get the job done. I read the same thing on this board about the Dodge 4.7 vs The Hemi (5.7), and how the Hemi gets much better mileage.
Aldive: This is the first time I have ever heard of an o2 sensor going without a CEL. That's quite odd.
Is there an interval for O2 sensor replacement? I know you can get them ( the voltage ) checked, and that pretty much dictates whether they are good or not. Does anyone know what this would cost? Because if it's too much, than you might be better off replacing them all together.
If you want best mileage possible, you will have to put two things into consideration. Maintenance and Driving habits.
With Maintenance in mind, here are a couple of things to shouldn't ignore:
-Mass Air Flow Sensor; clean if dirty
-Fuel Filter; Replace after proper interval
-PCV valve; Replace after 60,000 miles
-Spark Plaug Wires; replace when replacing spark plugs
-Tire Pressure: Doesn't hurt to check every couple of months, when ever your at a gas station
-Injector/Fuel System cleaner: service or out of a bottle
-ECU; It doesn't hurt to reset the computer to default
-Alignment of Tires; When it is suspected that they are out of alingment, it can cost ya a few MPG.
When driving for fuel economy, keep this in mind:
- A great deal of gas is spent getting the X going, so don't floor it, go easy on the peddle when accelerating. Also don't go faster than you need too. I am not saying you gotta go slow, but be reasonable. Avoid accelerating and use your cruise control too. Keep speeds steddy.
-Brake early as opposed too late. Aggressive braking will bring you down a few mpg, so take your time and use as much space as possible.
-Avoid driving with your windows down. If your hot, use your AC.
