What's wrong? (maybe the 02 sensor?)

Hello I have a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer 5.0L.

About a month ago the check engine light came on, took it to a shop and they said the reading came back for the catalytic converter.They reset it and said to come back if it comes on again.They don't do any exaust work so they're not trying to get buisness.

It came on again maybe 2 weeks ago, I just un-did the negative battery terminal for about 5min. to reset it myself.A couple nights ago it came on again.

There is no rotten eggs smell and no funny noises.

I've been told it's probably one of the 02 sensors.The only thing is, my exaust smells quite bad.Like gas.

Good reading.But then why has it come up 3 times within a 1 month period?Never did that before.........

Going to get the actual code today.Either way I probably try and get rid of it anyway.Long overdue for a change.

If you run a diag on it, if it is the o2 sensor it will say so. The left one is easy to change out, the right one is easy if you have skinny 3 foot long arms. You can see it but it is kind of hard to replace unless you remove stuff.
