wheel jerks when I turn the wheels

Hello , I have a problem ... I recently became the owner of a 1996 Explorer Sport 4x4 with a 4.0 engine. I have been trying to work the bugs out of it and get it in dependable shape and I have a problem I am unaware of the answer to. When I turn the wheels sitting still left or right or if I am moving very slow and turn it either way it jerks and the engine sounds like it misses. I drove it a little before this problem came about and it was very smooth and didn't do this before. Does this sound like a weak power steering pump ? or possibly a vacuum leak somewhere ? ... any suggestions are greatly appreciated and thank you in advance for your time taken to reply ... RSM

Try turning the wheel lock to lock several times with the engine running. Sometimes air gets in the system and needs to be "bled" out.
