I think my 2007 Ford Ranger is missing the innermost fender liner. I can see the side of the enginer on the driver's side when looking past the tire. The passenger side has the liner. I'm assuming this isn't normal - am I right?

It has been "normal" since about 2002. Ford eliminated the DS shield to lower engine compartment temperatures to comply with its own strict desert acceptance test requirements. If you don't live in the desert and want to install one, just order the passenger side part number and reverse the push pins. I added one to my 2003 and it helps keep the engine compartment much cleaner in wet/muddy conditions. (~$15)

Also, don't bother trying to order a new DS guard from an earlier model Ranger (like I did the first time, LOL). The DS part number has been superceded to the 1/4 length, 2003-style 'guard' that is completely useless. Just go to a junkyard or order a new full-length PS guard from the dealer.

PS part number: F87Z-16102-AA

That is the correct number for my 2003 and I would guess that newer trucks use the same.

When I bought my 2002, it had the short liner on the driver side. I saw it during initial inspection and asked the dealer to install the full length liner. They looked up the part number for a longer liner, ordered it and installed it without any argument.

I drive in the desert a lot and have never had a problem.

And you probably won't under normal conditions.

Ford has a test procedure that tries to simulate the worst case customer use. It specifies 100F+ temps, 100% sunload, low wind velocity and the use of high volatility fuel (similar to winter fuel). There are acceleration driveability tests after extended idles and hot soaks with the vehicle parked within a small, fenced enclosure. The vehicle must be able to meet a minimum driveability standard in this test before Ford will sell it.

Chances of duplicating these test requirements in the real world are slim but still possible. Most drivers will never see anything close to this combination of conditions, even in the desert Southwest.

thanks for info. on well sheild for rangers Bob. I'd love to see a pic of your truck. Supercharged 5L must haul!

Updated info on the passenger side splash shield:

OE Ford part number F87Z-16102-AA
currently retails for about $25

There is also a less expensive alternative to the factory PS splash shield:
RockAuto Part # FO1251144
About $9 plus shipping

The Ford shield comes with push pins installed. I don't know if they are included with the RockAuto part.

Same part fits the G2 Explorer?

I don't know if it would be a direct fit or not. I believe that the Gen 2 Ex part numbers are different.

Yeah, I saw that, just wondered if there was any difference in the cutout, or if it was the pushpin holes... I'll have to check this out...

My 2006 FX4 came with afull-length shield (IIRC, on the right side) and a short-length one on the other side.

I ordered a long one, rotated the push-pins, and it fit just fine.
