Hey guys I just joined the forum because I have a problem on my 1999 ford explorer 4x4 with the 4.0 that I just can not figure out. So here's my story on this explorer I'm just stuck on any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for such a long message just want to give full details so I can get the best information on my problem.

I recently got the truck for free and knew it had problems. When I drive it it drives pretty much perfect in 2wd the moment I put it in 4wd the front end becomes very rough. I have put in brand new cv axles with boots in because there was metal in boots as well as they were ripped and I also dropped the differential it all felt and looked good. The bearings and hub all feel fine and roll nicely.

When I was replacing the cv joints I put the truck on jack stands all the way around took front wheels off and started truck and put it in 4wd. When I did this I noticed when the drivers side a arms were fully extended it the cv was jumping around and becoming very rough but the moment I jack up arm an inch it goes away and is very smooth. Now this is only happening to the drivers side, but when driving on the street the noise sounds like it is coming from the passengers only when I put it in 4wd.

4wd works, but is very rough.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Lucas

Welcome to the Forum Lucas. :wavey: I moved your thread from the 91-94 (First Gen Explorer's forum) to the Correct forum (95-01) where you'll get much more activity.

You really shouldn't put the truck in 4wd on dry street pavement. Only use it on loose roadways, dirt, gravel, snow and ice. It should be smooth if you drive straight down a paved road, when you try to turn it will bind up and make some pretty nasty sounds.
