What year did the V8 engine start being added into the Explorers?

1996-2001

OH WOW. I didn't realize that. The 5.0 was introduced in '96? Were there any 5 speeds available for the V8's? Or are they all automatics?

There were no 5 speeds offered for the V8's. The only choice you had was the AWD or 2WD version of the auto 4R70W. Having that tranny, however, is decent compromise for not offering a manual. It is a very reliable automatic.

So no 4x4 in the V8's? Ugh. AWD and 4x4 isn't the same thing right? Were all V8's 5.0s?

nope, awd has no low range like a 4wd tcase does. however there is a common swap to a f150 tcase i believe you can do for v8 explorers. and yes the v8 was only offered in a 5 L size.

No. AWD continuously puts power to all four wheels with no driver input. The 5.0s were used up till 2001. After that they put in the 4.6.

Ahhh, I see! So to make a V8 X into a 4x4 I'd have to change the tcase and transmission to a 5 speed, cuz I don't want an automatic. What year F150 would fit?

The Awd 4r70w will fit with the f150 manual tcase.

So I would have to use an F150 transmission as well?

If you want a manual tranny then yes, otherwise the 4r70w from an AWD will work with the f150 manual tcase.

Ok, I am confused now. If I did the tcase transfer to the automatic, it would disable the AWD and make it a 4x4? Would I have to change the axles as well, to accomodate the hubs?

Woah, I think you are a tad confused.

AWD - This is a special BW t-case. It attaches to the tranny the same way the 4wd tcase does. You just swap out tcases. Thats it.
The hubs are not remove-able on the 2nd gen models.
This should answer your questions. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=166726

Ugh, too much work for me lol. At least I can PROBABLY, MAYBE find a decent 5.0 V8 Explorer if I decided to sell mine. I know AWD is not like 4WD, but here, only time I've used my 4x4 is in severe winter snow. I don't know if saving my 91 4.0 is worth it.
