I have 96 explorer and it has tape player. I love the way all the controls are and would hate to switch to one of those narrow small CD players just to be able to play CDs. Is there any place where I can buy used Explorer native radio with CD player?

If someone is planning to change their current radio/CD to some other system I would be interested in buying it.

If anyone knows a place where I can buy a second-hand explorer CD player/radio I would very much appresiate your tip.

Thanks a lot

Mine is a 1 disc factory cd player and I got it from www.carparts.com (which is JC whitney now I think) for $200 and it's from a 2000 XLS.

I dont know, but I might have my old explorer CD player laying around somewhere. It came out of my 96 a couple of months after we bought the X new and has been sitting around since.

i have the cd/tape/am/fm unit from my 98 laying around. the display doesnt work, but thats the only thing, other than that it works perfectly. theres a bunch of guys who claim that they fixed their displays with the same problem (98's are notorious for it, other years too.) theres a thread around somewhere (i think you have to pop off the face and re-solder something.)

let me know if youre interested. ill let it go REAL cheap, otherwise it just collects dust.

Another source at reasonable prices is EBay. Just be careful to double check compatibility.

I'm gonna have a 6 disc factory changer. It fits in the console of my 96 xlt. Everything works fine, probably could use a cleaning just becasue it's 6 years old. Make me an offer and I'll get back to you. It hooks right up to the factory tape player.

Thanks for replies, more info?

Thanks for your replies everyone. After reading more about it it seems that there is more to it than just swapping the bloody thing. Is there a way of checking what year of CD player will go with 96 explorer? There seem a lot of 98' available, but would it work with my 96'? Also some people mentioned that you can hookup a 6 CD changer to the cassette player, but then how do you control it? There are no CD controls on the standard cassette player...

Any info you may share???

Thanks a lot everyone, sorry for so many questions, but I am not very techy person (software any day, hardware... never been exposed really...)

One good source of info on "Ford Explorer" OEM radios is http://www.radiosandmore.com. They sell the Ford OEM radios and list the vehicles they fit. One note of caution, even though a particular radio may fit the opening and will take the existing wire harness without modification doesn't mean all the features of the "factory installed" system will be available, i.e. subwolfer, changer, personal audio for back seat, etc. The 98 & 99 premium MACH/Audiophile units were made by Pioneer for Visteon for Ford. Visteon also has a web site (www.evisteon.com) but there's not a lot of info there. Visteon maintains a list of authorized dealers (from their web site); they are an excellent source of info. Much better than Ford (unresponsive) and the dealers. Most of the time, the Ford dealers pass off to the authorized Visteon folks.

I have one also I'll sell you

I just took the one out of my '00 explorer. AM/FM/TAPE/CD. The two din size one. If you're interested email me at joeblow@100percentgpk.com

Thanks

how can you tell?

I found a great stereo but the guy sais it will only fit my car if I have premium sound system and not a JBL sound system. I bought it used, so how do you find out what is that bloody system??? It does not say on it!!!

Is there any way to tell what that thing is???

Damir.
