I had a leaky coolant problem this summer when i was on vacationa dn i used that stop leak stuff you get at NAPA and it solved my headache and allowed me to continue my vacation :)

Well for those of you who read that I did a recent and successful coolant system flush in my explorer, well what ever that stuff plugged up my flush cleared it out

SO, now on the top part of my engine it would appear theres coolant there, its getting dark and i can't really tell for certain but on the top part of my engine on the passenger side, it has a pool of liquid that HAS to be coolant. the engine is completely dry otherwise and well, the scent of coolant kinda gives it away.

Is there a common place around there known to leak on these rigs? Before I start rippin stuff out from under the hood.

Thanks guys,

Leo

The heater core is over there, that might be what is leaking.

Could just be the heater control valve. Pretty inexpensive part and easy to replace. It's a little grey part that has lots of hoses going to it, looks kinda like a bon-bon.

i'll check those based on your descriptions and compare it to a haynes manual.

btw, unless my fan is on high speed for blowing heat or air in the vehicle the fan sounds like its going to fall out of the dash. very very noisy...is this in the heater core?

forgive my ignorance regarding this part :)

Alec: where is this heater control valve?

Just for clarification fellas, when it leaks, it comes down over the front side of the front axle, on the passenger side. if this helps. :)

dunno where it is on yours, but on mine it's on the passenger side in the rear 1/3 of the engine bay. It's located on top of the rest of the A/C crap that's there.

I don't think 1st gens used a bypass valve (my '92 doesn't anyway). When I've had similar leaks, it's been the heater hoses, which are on that side of the engine coming into the water pump. Try checking those.

According to the book, 1994 is the first year with the heater control valve. I bought one to put on our 1992 (helps make the a/c colder).

MrShorty: how many hoses are there? I checked the obvious one thats on top that comes straight from the radiator but that one seemed fine from what I can see...how many more are lingering underneath?

thnx again fellas, this has all been a great help.

There are two that go from the water pump (front of the engine behind the fan) to the heater core (passenger side firewall).

yeah i think it is the heater control vavle had to replace mine's you will see four hose going to it and one vacumm hose. it is right there you can't miss it.
