The ABS light came on on my 17- month old Exporer V8 2WD with 37,600 miles.

The Antilock system is definately not working. The light has gone off breifly when it did the ABS functioned (pulsing brake) even during a slow, dry stop.

I'm hoping it just a dirty sensor. Does anyone have a suggestion on where (what) to look for?

If it is still under warranty then under no circumstances should you try to fix it yourself. Take it to the dealer and have them fix it.

Sorry for the typo - The car now has 37,600 miles so it is out of warranty. My original note had it as 1 month old, not 17 months old.

If you've got a decent dealer, they should do a repair like that with only 1600 miles past the warranty.

I know for at least the 2nd Generation Ex's, the ABS sensor is located on the top of the wheel bearing/hub assembly, which is just behind the rotor. (front) It's just a little black box, about 1/2 inch square.

I had the same problem on my 2003 and it turned out the rear speed sensor. The dealership replaced but like you I'm past the warranty and had to pay. :(

Mine came on once and I took it to the dealer. They said it was fine..yeah right. It never came on again but watch, it'll probably come on again once I'm out of warranty.

If your 03 is like mine, it has an ABS sensor in the rear differential, and an ABS sensor on each front wheel, behind the each rotor;

Furthermore there is an ABS pivot valve (aka proportioning valve) and an ABS sensor in the master cylinder. Did I leave anything out? I may have...
