I just bought a k@n filter and I was wondering where to drill holes in the factory airbox for better air flow? On the top or the bottom? Does it matter if the filter gets wet when it rains?
Thanks, Jason

Jason-what year is your Explorer? If its '91-'94 then you'll want to cut holes on all sides and a couple on the bottom. Remember to only do it to the bottom half of the airbox-before the air filter. You don't want any unfiltered air to get past your K&N. As for water, cutting holes in the bottom will allow any moisture that does find its way in there to drain out. I'll be one of the cheapest mods you can do which will give you good results.

So, where do you cut the holes if you have a '95 or older explorer?

Drill the holes on all 4 sides under the air cleaner..Just take it out, and go to town!! Make some of the ones that are already on the bottom bigger, for better drainage if water does get in there.. I haven't had any problem with water getting in, so I wouldn't worry about it.

OK, I give up. I've followed all this drilling the airbox discussion with great interest, but my 95 Limited doesn't appear to have a box with 4 sides. It is roughly tubular, coming straight out of the fender, and is full of air filter. It looks to me like any holes drilled would compromise the filtering. Am I looking in the wrong place entirely?
