Not sure if Autozone still does it for free or not but you can try them.

1995 Explorers are OBD I, Autozone won't run OBD I codes.

You can buy an OBD I code reader at WalMart for around $25.

they are only 25 bucks? i thought these thinngs were like 400 bucks?!?!

code readers to read EEc-IV or ODB-I are very inexpensive..

Code readers to read ODB-II are 100+
Scanners to read ODB-II can be $400+ (my neighbors snap on model cost him $5k)

Scanners can get real time data (what is happening now, e.g. current rpm, o2 sensor voltage, TPS voltage etc) when a code reader just gets the codes that are stored..

some tuners also read codes... a thing to keep in mind so you don't buy two tools that can do the same thing...

Call Autozone. Maybe Kragens. Make a few calls and you might get lucky. Worth $160.

Kragens (Checker) will rent an ODB-ii scanner, but I don't know if it does ODB-I (EEC-IV)...

its one of those, pay for it rentals.. (e.g. give them $300, they give you the scanner, you give back the scanner, they give you $300)

So does he have the same ECU as a '94? If so he can get one from walmart for about $25.

Yep, although I think they are closer to $30-$35.

edit: some AutoZones will run EEC-IV codes, but not all of them. If you don't want to buy one, call around and see if any local AZs do it.

edit #2: $15 Reader
