I'm looking for the best place to jack up my X. I'll be placing jack stands. I'm thinking the rear diff? I'm installing a new class III reciver hitch, and need to lift the truck. I've never lifted a 4x4 so I'm not sure where to place the lift. I figure rear diff for the lift, and jack stands at on either side of the diff on the axel? or am I all wrong. Hell, I've never jacked up a rear wheel drive anything. Help.:( :p :D

jack it up by the frame. once you take the spare tire out you shouldent need to jack it up at all. i use ramps for that kinds stuff

I jack up the rear on the differential. You can put the stands up on the shackles, frame or on the axle.

I've jacked up the frame but that was only to get one tire off the ground.

Are you sure about that, it doesnt seem to safe to be putting jack stands on the shackles.

I hope it's safe, because I was underneath it for a long time! If someone knows for sure, I hope they say something so I won't do it anymore.

I thought lifting on the diff is supposed to crap out your diff cover seal?? Lifting on the diff is convient but I heard you should lift from the axel tubes or frame :D

yeah not the best idea to use the diff as a jack point. people do it with problems, but its not the recommended way. and you couldn't pay me to climb under a vehicle that was resting on stands on its shackles!!!
put the stands under the axle as far to outside as you can, or under the frame. that's the best spots.

You, NEVER, NEVER!!!!! Jack a vehicle at the pumpkin. It can not support the weight and you will cause damage. Then you will be in for some big time money.

I thought back to it, and realized that I actually haven't supported my X from the shackles before. I couldn't remember what I did last time I jacked up my X.

Ok, So I jacked it up on the pumpkin... JK. That did seem like a bad idea. I jacked it up at the axle/leaf junction and it went fine. Did'nt need to get it up much anyway. Got the hitch changed over to the class III, looks a lot better. I'll be putting it to use this weekend. Thanks for all the tips folks.
