I keep seeing people getting these kits for 40-50 bucks. Where do you order it from? Also what is the part no for the Ford washer?

I think I may tackle this myself. If I can't then what does the Ford dealer charge? Would a regular independant mechanic be able to perform the work?

It will run $1000-$1300 at a Ford dealer to have them fix it.

If you are new at this, or don't have a lot of knowledge about it, you probably don't want to try this as your first major project. It's not a simple repair.

$1000 to do the lower intake manifold gaskets and tensioner?? I thought I read a post where a guy paid $192 to have it done by Ford.

I've been working on 5.0L stangs for over 10 yrs now. I'm pretty decent with a wrench so Im gonna tackle this myself. I was just wondering if it was worth it to pay someone though. I would probably pay someone $200 to do it, but not $1000... That's insane for like 3 hrs of work.

I did mine myself, and I am no superstar under the hood, it took me maybe 2 hours to do. I would recomend that you have a repair manual incase some of the vac lines get misplaced during the operation, then you will know where they go...

SO is the OOM12 kit a "band aid" for the infamous timing chain problem? It seems like they give you a longer tensioner to make up for the extra slack in the chain..

The kit changes the oil pressure to the tensioner so that you don't get that noise when cold. It will not repair broken tensioner or stretched chains. If you have the slight rattle between 2,000 and 2,500 rpm when cold then this will fix it. Well it did for me anyway. Also fixes the cold start issue where the inlet manifold leaks air. (modified 'O' ring material). So if you have a rough idle when cold then this will do it.

Yeah I always knew what the lower o-rings were for but I was always a bit stumped as to what was different with the new tensioner...now I know. Thanks for info.

The kit cost me about 55$ roughly from Ford. The Ford mechanics told me it was a 2.5 hour job for them and at 77$ an hour or whatever they charge that's right around 192$.. I ended up getting an oil change, the parts and the installation for 250$.. I would talk to your dealer about it. I forgot the part number but the parts department will know what you're talking about when you say you need the kit for the "recall on the gaskets and tensioner"

hope this helps.. and it's definitely not a 1000$ job, i don't know what that guy's smoking.

edit: the kit contains more than the tensioner. it also includes a new set of gaskets for your intake manifold. they will really help your idle - and also the "cold start" problem that a lot of the explorers encounter. well worth the job

Yeah I didnt think lower intake manifold gaskets would be a $1000 job. That poster was probably confused with the timing chain job.
