Hey all. Here I am upgrading the radio with a Blaupunkt Casablanca and I'm trying to bypass the factory amp, but I can't find one! I have a '98 w/the factory CD/cass player. Here's what I have:

What do you think? I unplugged both harnesses from the unit in the left picture, but I still get sound through the speakers. I have 2 amps I want to hook up and I want to use the factory speaker wire.
Thanks for your help in advance.

I can't see the pics, but the factory amp is located behind the pass side panel in the cargo compartment, between the rear seats and the net pocket/sub.

I don't think your 98 has an external amp unless you have a subwoofer from the factory.

Take a look at Kris Guilbeaux's excellent guide at Dead Link Removed

Good kuck....

Thanks for the speedy replies

Now that I think about it, my factory cd/cass has what looks like a small amp built into it. I say this because there are cooling fins on the back. A lot of good this does because the whole idea of swapping HU's is because of it overheating and shorting out a circuit board. I'll hook up the amp and run the speaker outs from the amp to the factory plug behind the radio so I can use the existing wires. Let me know if it sounds like I'm smokin' crack on this on. Thanks again for your help. BTW, did the pics not come out? (new guy)

yeah. 98 and up explorers dont have an external amp for the door speakers. just for the subwoofer.

oops, sorry. just trying to help.

Update...

After realizing that I didn't have an external amp, thanks guys, it was smooth sailing. Actually it will be smooth sailing because I haven't hooked up the 4ch amp to the door speakers yet. I just wired up a 2ch(bridged) to my Sony 10in sub in a Q-logic box. If anybody is thinking about upgrading from the factory unit, I HIGHLY recommend the Blaupunkt Casablanca. 2 sets of full range preouts, 1 preout for the sub (all 4v), excellent tuner, and cd specs, all for $210 to your door from Crutchfield.

Thanks again everybody for your help.
Joe
P.S. I finally get to start a list of mods!!!
