Which 4x4 to buy?

Now that you have thrown kids into the equation. What ever you get, you need a cage with some grab handles so they don't wrap their fingers around the cage itself. Something that I have yet to install to my cage.
You have gone from rock crawling to easy trails with kids in the same rig. Sounds like you or someone is in for a lot of modifications for your future rig.

Glad your thinking of the kids. They will love it, just like the kids I take wheeling with me.

Great to hear from you all and thanks for the additional info about 4x4 vehicles. since I was asking for information on many forums and now I think it is a good idea to buy a Jeep Cherokee 4.0
Have a lucky and wonderful 2008 HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Thanks so much again for the advice.

As long as you don't get a 4 cyl. XJ, you should be okay.

Thanks for the help everyone....

Is there any other vehicle as comfortable, sophisticated, or better appointed as Cherokee? I also heard that Cherokee having a wide range of engines which make them good for towing or driving at higher elevations.

Regards

Ron Thorey

Yeah go for Explorer Sport 5spd, because in low range in a 5spd explorer most of the time it will crawl in 1st gear on its own up pretty steep hills without stalling out, and good for going down steep hills because you have the transmission directly pushing on the motor it will allow you to go down over easier than what it does in an automatic.

In most cases, I think an Explorer of the same year is going to be more comfortable and better appointed, but what are your priorities? You started talking about building a rock crawler and that does not go hand in hand with ANY of those things. If what you really want is an ultra comfortable and sophisticated family car that also does OK on trails from the factory, then get yourself a Land Rover.

toyota 4runners are good. my friend has one on 31" tires and i don't think he ever freakin gets stuck

have u decided what u wanted to get ron

Any suggestion?

Thanks Friends
Don’t you think Land Rover complex electronics may cause problems also requires a high octane fuel with expensive OEM parts?

Land Rovers are nice if you’re going to the mall parking lot, but on the rocks (like you mentioned you want to do), they’re limited. If you want something more comfortable then an XJ Cherokee, get a Grand Cherokee. A WJ (’99-’04) will be the best as far as comfort goes. The ZJ (’93-’98) has (in my opinion) an interior that is far behind the quality and layout of the WJ. A word of warning, though: It will be harder to find bigger suspension lifts for the WJ and ZJ. T&T makes suspension lifts for them, as well as Rock Krawler. Rock Krawler makes a 6.5” lift for the WJ that will fit 33” tires with minimal trimming. If you trim back your fenders and firewall and add 1.5” coil spacers, you could fit 35s without worrying too much about body contact.

Hi...
As it is a big in size is land rover will ok in mud and can we modified it easily as jeep Cherokee can be.?

Yes on the older models with the solid axles.

The older ones can be modified fairly easily. I'm pretty sure they had solid axles and leaf spring suspension, so getting a set of lift springs made wouldn't be too hard. There are plenty of aftermarket replacement pieces to replace the cheap plastic parts that Land Rovers are famous for.
