I am looking at either a Flowmaster 40 series or a Borla. But I don't know which Borla muffler to get, Is it the turbo muffler? Do they have dual exits and single inlets? and Where can I get the cheapest one, I saw the turbos in Jegs for 105.99. I would also like everyones opinion on which sounds better. Thanks in advance.

Borla makes a good product, especially if you'll be keeping the ride a long time. As for the Flowmasters, 40 Series if you want it loud, 50 Series if you don't and leaving the resonator on reduces both. HTH

Ryan,
I have a Borla on mine and the sound and performance is good. I am not sure if the muffler is a turbo type. It has one rear exit from the muffler that divides into a two tip outlet. Installation was very easy but removing the factory exhaust was a bear. As far as price there is a thread on the subject about being able to get the Borla from Ford Racing I think for $165.00. I am not familiar with Flowmaster.

I got the Flowmaster cat-back system from Summit for around $170. Nice mellow sound at idle. Deep sound up till about 3500rpm and then it's all V6 sound till the redline. Performance gains were fairly significant.

From my previous post, hope it helps!

I went with 2.5" alum-steel tube and a Flo-Pro Performance muffler. I also added a nice big 3" chrome tip. I chose the Flo-Pro because it's a heavy gauge aluminized steel welded design instead of that locked seam crap. I also did some research on flow data so here it is:

Ford Stock 215cu ft./min.
Flowmaster 372cu ft./min.
Dynomax Super Turbo 456cu ft./min.
FLO-PRO Performace 500cu ft./min. (As if I'm gonna need it with my 4.0...

Anyway... It uses a louvered interior pipe instead of fiberglass that eventually blows out.

Bottom line is, wow does it sound nice! Deep warm sound without waking up the neighbors kind of deal. Very distinctive and definately noticable in the cab when accelerating but hardly noticable on the freeway. Can't tell if there's any performance boost cause I'm running the AC all the time.

Here's the best part... $185
That's installed including the chrome tip and tax at Mach 1 Muffler. I checked it out while it was still up on the rack and they did a great job!

I have a 91 Expl. 4L. For my exhaust i took
my muffler off and relpace it with a straight pipe.
You have a nice sound, you are still legal, and it's
cheap. If you replace the hole pipe it will last youm
for a long time. And it will not effect the computer.
But if you pull a trailer it will get loud; not for
me.

Gab -

May be in Canada, removing the exhaust completely is legal but not here in CA. The only place here I can think of that mufflers are not required is at race tracks.

A muffler is required here for street driving and even off-road and you'll be fined and will not pass visual emission test here w/o one.

Straight pipes and glass packs! At least on a 302 it works well. I put those on my 79 LTD with a 302, and man did I have the power, and it sounded good also, not loud, but had a nice rumble. Of course I didn't have pipes after the mufflers, so my axle got a bit dirty.:)

Does Borla make a muffler with a single 2 1/4 inlet and dual 2 1/4 outlets? If so what the model name and stuff. Thanks in advance.

I have a 91 and i did the streight pipe, glass packs and it was good for about two years and then it gets noiser and noiser, i plan to put borla on it soon! I sugest doing the same

Thats the problem with glass packs, the glass blows out after a few years.

You should get Flowmaster 40 series...it has a nice deep tone

I have a Flowmaster dual in, single out. I removed the resonator and put in 2.5 exhaust with a 3" resonated tip. I sounds deep when shifting. I'm thinking of replacing the tip with a twin tips? I'm wondering how will it sounds?
