Ok, I have read through many of the discussion's on this site on intakes. I have been looking for a while and one that has caught my attention is the
Airaid Intake System. Has anyone installed the Airaid on their explorer or is there a better intake then the Airaid. I plan on getting one real soon.

I haven't heard much of the air-aid system, but the ones I think that are the best are the K&N or the MAC. Now, that's only if your going with the full system, KKM makes a intake cone that'll fit onto the end of your existing stock intake hose. I will hopefully be purchasing a MAC (or similar) soon. I want to try this one out:

I have not hear that air raid made an intake for X's. Maybe i'm wrong though. i have heard great things about the MAC intake though. That would probably be your best bet.

The volant looks the nicest IMHO, but it is expensive. I am going with the MAC myself.

I've looked at the MAC intake but thought it would take in too much hot air from the engine. I would like to bring in as much cool air as possible. The temp here in LA has been around 105, and my IAT is reading 130. The power on my X is horrible when it gets that hot.

At what speed is the IAT 130 F?

If you monitor IAT at various speeds you will find that the IAT is within a degree or two of the ambient temperature.

I have shown this to be the case with both the stock intake tube ( with KKM ) as well as the Mac intake system. That is in the hot Florida conditions,

The only time I see high IAT is when stuck in bumper to bumper traffic and no intake will help those conditions.

The 130 reading is at 70 mph, but can get up to 150 at idle as the sensor never reads ambient temp. The IAT only varies about 5 degrees from idle to 70. I have thought about relocating the IAT but have not found a way to wire it to a cooler place in the vehicle. Anyone every tried this.

Drew, that's the old intake I used to have. Paid 70 for it on eBay. Worked great.

Thats strange.

Please post a picture of the intake and the location of the IAT sensor.

Oh really? Well I just ordered it. Found some ebay discount codes online, and so I went ahead and ordered one for mine and also the new George Strait CD. Alright! I'm going to the beach next week, but once I get back, hopefully the intake will be here by then and I'll put it on. Of coarse, I'll show pictures.

EDIT: I forgot to add. At work we purchased one of the K&N "recharge" systems that come with the cleaner and oil...so I will just use that for mine. Gotta love free stuff!

The 97-98 models have the IAT located in the air tube. 99 and above have the IAT wired in to the MAF sensor. They did this to get the actual temp readings of the incoming air. I solved the hot weather problem by ordering some heat wrap that wraps around the intake tube, and then wraped some around the air cleaner housing. This really cooled down the air inside the tube.
