Can you guys tell me which intake would give the best increase in horsepower for the money: the KKM intake or the K&N FIPK? The KKM costs about $90 where as the FIPK costs roughly $290. What do you guys think?

I have the KKM kit myself and I love it. I don't have all the specs but when you put the KKM intake on it is a noticeable gain in acceleration. It's not worth the extra 200 bucks to get a K&N.

make one. save yourself some money

Airforce One makes a nice stainless steel one for around $200

Being in Cali, you may want to get the K&N because of the CARB Certification. Or you can stick a K&N sticker on a KKM and nobody would ever know.

as Robb said, the only reason the K&N is a lot more expensive, is due to it being CARB approved.
I'm sure all intake kits give roughly the same performance increase.

I went to K&N's website and looked at the dyno specs that they have for their FIPK kit for the SOHC motors. Their kit which comes with a new conical filter element and a new intake tube produces a peak of 6hp over stock.

For the SOHC on my '99 Sport...

As you can see, there's really not a huge power gain from just an intake and its only 5 hp above 4000 RPM. Once installing my KKM, it was quite obvious the stock air box is what causes the most restriction. Also, the stock intake tube on the SOHC is relatively short, so replacing it might gain you an extra 2 hp which to me was not worth $200.

But if you want a new intake tube and nice filter, Explorer Express now has a Mac intake for the SOHC's which includes a chrome tube and a K&N style filter.

And then just order some K&N filter oil from their website and request some stickers too and slap that bad boy on the new intake and no one will be the wiser.

I really don't see how an intake will screw your emissions anyway...

it won't screw your emissions.. but it must be CARB certified to pass emissions. Why? No clue...

How is a smog shop going to know if the intake is CARB certified or not? If I get the KKM and don't have any K&N stickers on it does that mean I won't pass the emissions test?

depends, probably. I believe any non-OEM part that is CARB certified, will have a CARB# stamped on it somewhere. They may ask where that number is, if there are no K&N stickers on it.
But then again, some smog shops probably don't really care. It all depends on the people that work there.

All of the Mac Systems are CARB approved and come with the sticker. We have the Mac in stock for V6 OHV (96->) V6 SOHC, V8 5.0 & V8 4.6.

The V8 5.0 #3659 $134.95 (CARB E.O. #D-241-5) in stock at Explorer Express.

wooh. John, that's cherry lookin'!

I've heard all kinds of horror stories about folks going in to get smog tested and not passing the "visual" test. No kidding. They look and see any modifications, including holes in the airbox, and they fail you right then, even here in Texas, where the laws are not nearly as tough as Cali. I remember someone saying they had figured out how to rig a K&N conical INSIDE the stock air box with the bottom cut out, just so they could pass the visual test.

But what do I know. Could all be uban legend. :p

had the KKM since last weekend and it is nice.

All you need to do is show your local smog guy the sticker. The approval number green flags the whole conversion.

Do you have our rear sway bar upgrade yet? It is by far one of the best upgrades for any Explorer, especialy a Sport. It is inexpensive and easy to install.

By the way, we also carry the cat-back exhaust system by Mac Products for $274.95

so the MAC Intakes are now emissions-legal? WOOHOO!

Hey John. I am really considering your swaybar. I love the whole x-spec package. How much for the sway? In no particular order my next 3 are chip, exhaust and, sway.

The X-Spec Rear Sway Bar ZD5622 is $179.95. If we get enough interest we can get a group buy going. It is by far one of the best upgrades you can do to an Explorer.

This picture shows the difference between our bar & the stock bar.

KKM Intake?

What is the best price you can find for the KKM intake (91-94 filter & pipe)? Where do you buy it?
