I am contemplating buying my cousin's 97 Exploder XLT. I know it's a fine vehicle (or he would've *****ed about it ad nauseum).

Anyway, his son drove it through a foot of water and blew the motor (which was replaced two months ago). The air cleaner sucked in water.

My first question: Which motor was OEM (I don't have the VIN handy), and which does it have now? All I know is it now reads "4.0 EFI" on the top of the motor. Are there obvious differences in the OHV and SOHC motors?

2nd: He purchased Ford's extended warranty. Is it transferable?

You have a 4.0L OHV engine. The SOHC motor has "4.0L SOHC" on top the engine. The 4.0L OHV engine is a pushrod engine with the camshaft in the block. The SOHC engine is a Single-Overhead Cam engine. The SOHC engine has aluminum cylinder heads where as the OHV engine doesn't. Both blocks is totally different.

I think Lobo Louie wants to know what the original engine was, not the current one.

I would imagine it to be the OHV (or EFI, but they are both EFI). It wouldn't make since to change out ALL of the engine and related components to go to a less powerful engine.
