I'm an old guy and don't need sub woofers, amps and all that crap. I just want to replace the factory radio in my 92 XLT with a radio/CD/MP3, and replace the blown out factory speakers.

Looking at some of the other postings, it looks like a Panasonic, Kenwood or Clarion would be adequte for my needs.

First question: How hard is installation, what with the door panels and all?

Q2-What speakers should I look at?

Removing door panels to replace speakers is simple. Take a look at http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25999 for instructions.

As for what speakers are best for YOU.... go to a stereo store and listen to them. Pick the ones YOU like best.

You will hear lots of "get brand x, its the best, cause I have it". Take such advise with a grain of salt. Get what sounds best to YOU.

Good luck......

As far as listening to various speakers, I am not sure it would do any good. I have partial hearing loss in both ears so I can't tell the difference.

Looking at the Crutchfield site mentioned in one of the other posts, I noticed that I can get a Kenwood KDC MP225 tuner and 2 sets of kenwood speakers for $202. shipped! That includes all the installation kits, shipping, etc. That seems like a good deal and adequete for what I need.

Have you cancelled out Pioneer for some reason, because I think they have some of the best quality for the price. They're a good value, the next deck I get will most likely be one. I had one before but it got stolen. Also, I would strongly suggest against Kenwood, I have had 2 of their head units and the cd reading lasers have both died after a year or so (no they aren't jsut dirty i tried cleaning them), and either can't read some cds or they skip a lot. Also my MP3 kenwood one i have is quite buggy, can't read certain discs, fast forwarding and rewinding its funky, and the built in amp is just plain more distortion and not as powerful as my pioneer one was.

Haven't ruled out pioneer. I will take a look.
