Which transmission do I have?

How do I identify if I have the 5 spd auto or 4 spd auto on a 1999 Mountaineer? Looking in the manual, it shows the same gear selector display for both the 4spd and 5spd, and when I accelerate gradually and try to listen/feel for shifts, I really can't tell if it's 4 or 5.

The mountaineers only came with one engine - the 5.0 L - and this engine came with only one transmission - the 4 speed 4r70w

It's actually a 4.0L SOHC, which is why I'm not sure which tranny it has. It looks like (according to Wiki) that the 4.0 SOHC became standard in '98.

Should I assume that it has the 5 spd then?

OMG youre right, the mountainers were available with the v6 -- i thought they were all v8s! Sorry about that.

Yeah its a 5 speed then - the 5R55E transmission
